One Piece Ends a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in January, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will go on a quarterly break until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will release a pair of cours every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio explains this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — including more content, rhythm, and pacing of the source material.” However, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which means additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a half-year break that began in October 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the visuals and let the manga to get further ahead to prevent a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to deliver viewers with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the story. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the series adapting one chapter, with some instead covering one and a half chapters or more to make up for time.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of creation, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and naturally itself have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the art can vary widely between installments and the next. Today, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple at most coming out each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
